SFO Ground Transport Options: BART, Taxi, App Ride, or Reserved Chauffeur

Decide the arrival and the door before you pick a mode

Mode choice fails when you start with a favorite brand. SFO is a large campus. A Domestic arrival with a rolling suitcase and a hotel a short walk from a station you already know how to use is a different problem from an International arrival with two checked bags, a child, and a Palo Alto office door.

You do not need a travel-time promise to make the first cut. You need to know whether you can carry everything through a station, whether you will accept a second ride after a train, and whether someone must meet you by name. If any of those answers is no, a road mode—taxi, app, or reserved car—moves up. If the door is next to a station and the bags are honest, rail can be the whole middle of the trip.

SFO’s official ground-transportation page places the BART station at the International Terminal. Domestic arrivals connect on AirTrain. That is the campus fact. It is not a hotel lobby, a FiDi office elevator, or a Peninsula driveway.

BART is a strong candidate when three things are true at once. You can reach the station from your arrival side without more help than you want to ask for. The destination is a walk, or a short extra ride you already accept, from a station you know. Bags, children, and mobility needs fit a public train. If any of those is false, BART may still be part of someone else’s trip, but it is not your door-to-door answer.

Check the route, service hours, station access, and final connection before choosing rail. A late landing, bulky luggage, or a destination far from a station may change the plan. For Peninsula destinations, check any required connection instead of assuming a direct BART journey.

Taxi: center islands outside Arrivals

SFO describes taxi pickup at center islands outside Arrivals. A taxi is a walk-up road trip. You follow airport signs to the island, take the next available cab, and pay on that ride’s meter and rules. This page does not publish taxi fares or typical times into the city.

A taxi can suit a traveler who wants a road trip without arranging a chauffeur beforehand. Confirm that the available vehicle holds your group and bags, and ask about any child-seat or accessibility requirements before joining a vehicle.

Follow the airport’s taxi signs. A taxi pickup, an app pickup, and a pre-arranged chauffeur meeting are separate arrangements; do not move between them based on a curb you remember from a previous trip.

App ride: follow the current pin, not a remembered curb

SFO’s ground transportation page describes Domestic Lyft and Uber pickups at Level 5 of the Domestic Garage. Check the app and airport instructions for your specific terminal and product; do not apply the Domestic location to every arrival.

An app ride can suit a traveler able to manage the request and reach the assigned pickup point. Before requesting, check the class, current total, pickup walk, and cancellation window. If an assistant is booking for someone else, confirm how that passenger receives the pickup details.

Treat the pin as live instructions. A curb you used last year is not a plan. Do not copy a Domestic Garage level onto an International arrival, a premium product, or a large-vehicle request unless the app you opened that day says so. App rides and reserved chauffeurs are different SFO processes even when both end at the same hotel.

Reserved chauffeur: a prior confirmation, meeting instructions from that provider

A reserved chauffeur is a car you arranged before you landed, with a product name, a class, and meeting instructions that belong to that confirmation. Use it when the door you need is specific, the party should stay in one vehicle, bags make a station-and-walk finish unrealistic, or you want the number and the meeting plan before the aircraft arrives. It is not automatically better than BART, a taxi, or an app. Plenty of SFO arrivals do not need it.

Do not treat taxi islands, the Domestic Garage app level, or the public curb as the chauffeur meeting point. Different commercial products use different parts of the airport. Confirm the operator’s current SFO instructions for the reservation you hold—terminal, flight number, curbside versus an inside meeting, and what to do if the flight is early or late. Ask your hotel whether it offers an airport shuttle, where it loads, how much luggage it can take, and whether it operates at your arrival time. Use the hotel's current meeting instructions.

For a friend or colleague collecting you, coordinate when the vehicle approaches. SFO limits curbside use to active pickup and drop-off; drivers need a waiting arrangement away from the curb.

Match the mode to the destination, not to a generic “San Francisco” label

For a hotel near a BART station, check the complete journey from your terminal to the lobby. Include rail operating hours, luggage, hills and the final walk. If that route does not suit your needs, compare a connecting transit service or a direct road transfer.

For an address away from a BART station, check the onward transit connection and final walk as well as taxi, app and reserved-car options. The exact destination, arrival time and luggage determine which complete journey works for you.

For Peninsula, South Bay, East Bay, Marin, or wine-country destinations, compare the full journey. Check the rail connections and station-to-door segment against a taxi, app, or reserved-car quote. Do not treat a region name as proof of a direct train route or a short drive.

For a group that must stay together, confirm the seats and bags before choosing any road vehicle. If you are willing to split, compare the price and coordination of multiple vehicles with one confirmed group vehicle. Rail remains an option when everyone can manage the required connections.
